GETHSEMANE IN LAST LIGHT

The lion, thy sister,
eye frightened and starved,
Again shall lie down with the lamb.
Enter the lion’s dream.

And the sun like a giant bullwhip
snapped shut the sky.
When the lion in a dream
heard the lonely serpent sing,
“Deep lie the lashes of scorn;
wounded in your shadow,
I must be borne, I cannot go.
Sister, take my head
a moment to your breast.
Let Him who made me see
I have a place to be.
I had one once at His left hand
before He sent me down.
He loved to watch me
brooding on the waves,
put questions on the cross of thought
to pluck a thought apart,
equaled His to mine…”
And clinging softly there
the serpent fell to dine,
when the birds among the leaves pure calling
with quick longing seized her heart,
caused seas in her heart,
wing-beats in her breast,
and the lion screamed
for right of proximity
to the lamb.

CHILD MAGDALENE’S REVERIE

After Andrew Marvell

Walking and mincing as I go,
I am newfangled meat
in a horse-kind land.
Centaurs hot with wine
pass on tiptoe breathing by
in my lap the virgin hay.
The hunter at my heels
thrusts me up astride
plants me in a garden
of bright, adulterate fruit
kneels and falls to dine.
The others canter in;
rings full of eyes
gleaming through the brush,
I stir, rise, open, and grow sweet;
my each leaf quivering to his touch,
I print my roses on his lips,
ripe apples round his head.
